<div itemprop="description"><br /><br />OATWAY William Arthur M.D. FRCP (C)<br /><br />1921 &ndash; 2015<br /><br /> <br /><br />Dr. W. Arthur Oatway of Monarch Hall, Riverview, formerly of 136 Bromley Ave., Moncton, passed away peacefully at the Moncton Hospital in his 94th year on May 12, 2015. He was the eldest son of the late George and Agnes (Young), born in Smiths Falls, ON, on Aug. 23, 1921.<br /><br />Arthur will be sadly missed by his second wife of 18 years, Barbara (Steeves), his daughter, Sharman (Karnig) Arslanian and son, Stephen, Moncton; daughter-in-law; Maureen (the late Michael), Riverview; grandchildren, Mark (Jenn), Barrie, ON; Marnie, Jasper, AB; Alexander, Victoria, B.C. and great-grandchildren, Owen and Brynn, Barrie; a nephew, John (Melanie), Peterborough, ON, and their two sons, Jack and Nate. Also survived by Barb&rsquo;s daughters, Janet (the late Richard) Cuvelier, Winnipeg; Lynn (Dale) Ritchie and Clair (Michael) McWilliam, Moncton and son, Gary (Lucy) Steeves, Saint John; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.<br /><br />Besides his parents, Arthur was predeceased by his first wife of 48 years, Barbara (Sharman), his eldest son, Michael, brother John and his wife Wilma (Rhindress) and niece, Joanne (Scott) Lumsden.<br /><br />He was a graduate in 1943 of Queen&rsquo;s University Medical School. After an internship at the Ottawa Civic Hospital and Residency training in several Montreal hospitals in Anaesthesia, he joined the newly opened Moncton Tuberculosis hospital in 1947 as a clinician and anaesthetist. In 1953 he joined the Dept. of Anaesthesia of The Moncton Hospital and retired in 1988. During those years, he was involved in the clinical and administrative life of the hospital, He was Chief of the Dept. of Anaesthesia in rotation, served a term as President of the N.B. Division of the Canadian Anaesthetists Society, was a President of the Medical Staff and for 3 terms was Medical Staff Representative of the Board of Trustees. From 1960-1971 he was Assistant Administrator, Medical of the Hospital on a part-time basis. During those years he completed the 2 year course in Hospital Organization and Management given by the Canadian Hospital Association. <br /><br />Art was very civic minded and in 2002 he was granted Honorary Citizenship by the city in &ldquo;appreciation of his contributions to the well-being of the municipality&rdquo;. Over the years he was chairman of a number of organizations- the Board of Directors of the Moncton Family and Children&rsquo;s Services before social services and welfare were taken over by the Province, the Moncton District Council of the Boy Scouts, the Moncton Art Society, the Board of the Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation and the Moncton Public Library, the Moncton Gyro Club and the Moncton Probus Club and he was on the Board of the Moncton Community Concert Association. He was a member of St. Georges Anglican Church and the Masonic Lodge, Keith #23.<br /><br />He enjoyed international travel, salmon fishing, fly tying, bowling and at the age of 85 took up oil painting. <br /><br />Cremation has taken place under the direction of Fair Haven Funeral Home. There will be no visitation by request. A funeral service will be held at Fair Haven Funeral Home on Sunday, May 17th at 3:00pm with the Rev. Chris Van Buskirk of St. Georges Anglican Church officiating. A reception will follow the service. As an expression of sympathy donation to the Friends of the Moncton Hospital or to the charity of the donor&rsquo;s choice would be appreciated by the family.<br /><br /> <br /><br /></div>
